Greenhorn Games 2012 – Snoqualmie, Wa
Being surrounded by a few dozen kids under thirteen with access to free bananas, pickles, tasty beverages and hot dogs for three hours on a Saturday would usually result in a phone call to schedule a vasectomy by Monday morning. Not so at the Greenhorn Games. Just about the time of the year when the weather is getting nicer and I SHOULD get my ass hiking and ride real snow for a few more months but don’t feel like it anymore, I get my yearly stoke refill at the Greenhorn Games. Seriously, it’s the only contest I don’t sneak booze to if that tells you anything. Krush and the Snowboy Production fellas put on such a good show. Cheers to them and Snowboarder Magazine for running some stuff on it.
Feeders – Spokane – Extras (But Still Awesome)
I’ve been really lucky to have developed a relationship with Krush and Snowboy Productions in the last few snow seasons. My friend Bryan (http://www.bgiddensphotography.com) and I had a chance a few weeks ago to cover a contest in Spokane for Krush and Snowboarder Mag. Being the summer and all…the weather was nice for I think the first time ever that I shot pictures at a Snowboy event. Pretty stoked on how quite a few of them turned out.
White Pass – winter update
March has rolled around and suddenly will turn to April. The last month and a half or so has brought an amazing amount of snow after a dreadful month(s?) of rain, warm gray weather, more rain, a few floods, and a little more rain. Now, with a little luck and favorable winds, this season seems to have plenty of time left of lift access to go, and a few weeks of hiking past that and in to late May. I just saw today that Crystal is starting Spring passes on April 1st (….or are they?……hmmm) that will go until at least June 12th with lift access. Insane.
This year I have been working with the terrain park guys at White Pass to try to get them some good photos that they could potentially put on their website, to possibly send to sponsors, and generally showcase how amazing of a ski area White Pass is. Last summer, they installed two new chairlifts that allow access to an area of terrain that I couldn’t do justice in describing with words. It’s been a battle with the weather and my weekend warrior schedule, but things have been going along. For me…it’s been experience full of good times, lots of time behind the lens, learning more than I ever thought I could, and ton of bribing guys to hike one…more…time. And I’m incredibly grateful for every minute of it.
As spring kicks in, I hope to be up there taking advantage of all the snow they got in the last month and of course enjoying some spring sun for some great pictures. Here is how things have been going so far:
Downtown Throwdown
The Fifth Annual Downtown Throwdown was thrown down this last weekend in the seasonal rainforest knows as Occidental Park in Seattle.
Krush and Snowboy Productions were at it again this year with help from sponsors Lib-Tech, Jones Soda Co., Zumiez, Vans, The Snoqualmie at Snoqualmie, Skullcandy and diecutstickers.com. Somehow they managed to wake Austin Hironaka, Scott Stevens, Ben Bogart, Austen Sweetin, Forest Bailey, Ryan Paul, and 19 other pro snowboarders out of fall hibernation and make the trek to the only place in the country with snow…downtown Seattle. The scaffolding, rails, and barrels were set up just in time for the snow and salt to be laid down and Cobra Dogs to hit buns at high noon as $8,000 bucks were up for grabs.
Calling all the action from the air traffic control tower at the end of the course was none other than Jesse “donkey kick, real nice!” Burtner and his crew of Think Thank right and left brainers.
Rain fell, rappers rapped, Mark Landvik egged people on with promises of cash, and shredders shredded for 3 hours. In the end, about a 1000 people came and watched some of the best riders in the northwest and beyond slay a course made for pain and put on a hell of a show…way beyond expectations for October.
